Star Trek: The City on the Edge of Forever #1 Review

I’m personally very excited to be diving into another Star Trek title, and being able to start with a fascinating first issue. The enjoyment of hearing Kirk’s voice (in my head of course) speaking about star date 3134.6, couldn’t have set the issue up any better way.

Tipton and Tipton start us off with an illegal drug deal that goes down on the Enterprise. At first I was convinced that this was what the comic would focus on, a plot surrounded by drugs and how to handle the addicts on the ship. Without giving all away, I was wrong, and gladly so. We have Beckwith, the drug dealer, on the run from our famous leading crew. With semi exciting action sequences, Beckwith beams down to the unnamed planet that the Enterprise was orbiting. Kirk, Spock, and a handful of red shirts follow along to find themselves speaking with very surprising entities. All that needs to be said about the pages to follow, is that time travel is brought up in conversation and followed with lovely examples.

The entire comic was filled with breathtaking art that captured the likeness of our beloved characters from the original series down to a tee. If there has ever been any doubt on Woodward’s delivery, there certainly is no more.

I did wish there was a touch more action, however, I can understand that the lack of action is to focus on setting up what seems to be a wonderful plot line. Tipton and Tipton feed you with time travel information through most of the issue, information that will obviously be essential throughout the rest of the series. This first issue is worth picking up, simply because I believe the whole series will deliver with creativity and action.
