Warner Bros. and MGM have announced that the creative team behind the original Stargate movie will return to reboot the property. Roland Emmerich co-wrote the 1994 film with Dean Devlin, with Emmerich directing as well. Emmerich will return to helm the reboot while Devlin with shift into a producer role.
Emmerich and Devlin had this to say:
“The Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.”
Jonathan Glickman of MGM, and Greg Silverman of Warner Bros will oversee the reboot. No word on a release date.
The original film starred Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O’Neil and James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson. After the original film, the Stargate property went on to have a long life with multiple television series. Stargate was last seen on the small screen in the spinoff series Stargate Universe, which ended in 2011.
