Developer: Nightdive Studios

Publisher: Prime Matter

Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S (reviewed on the S)

In 1994, Looking Glass Studios released System Shock, which would provide the inspiration for games such as Bioshock, Deus Ex, and Prey. The game puts you in the shoes of a nameless hacker aboard a space station in 2072, and pits you against one of the best villains in videogames, the computerized entity SHODAN. In 2023, Nightdive Studios remade the game for PC, and now, in 2024, it comes to modern consoles.

PROS

Solid story

Plenty to explore

Good combat

Great villain

Good visuals

Good save system

CONS

Some awkward systems

Can be hard in spots to know where to go next

Cyberspace sections can be repetitive

Nightdive Studios has once again made a terrific remake of a classic game. System Shock holds up well, and its influences on other games is evident. The game does not hand hold, and there are times where it’s hard to know where to go or what to do next. Thankfully, there is plenty to explore and find, and the story unfolds well as you find audiologs. Well worth your time.
