The Legacy of Luther Strode #1 Review

Written by: Justin Jordan

Art by: Tradd Moore

Publisher: Image

It has been a long time coming, but finally the wait for more Strode has ended. The Strange Talent of Luther Strode put Jordan and Moore on the map a few years ago, so it is great to have them back to finish up their bloody creator-owned epic. I don’t use the term “epic” loosely either: Samson and Delilah have a sordid history, and this first issue reveals a portion of their tryst that was left out of the Bible.

Moore has been busy recently, not only drawing covers for Marvel, but also with his run on Ghost Rider. While that series was a lot of fun, Strode is where Moore can really let his hair down…and let the guts fly, usually literally. This opening issue throws us right back into the world of Luther Strode without missing a beat. Luther and Petra are under arrest and just waiting for a moment to get free. Luckily for us readers, it doesn’t take long before the car doors, bullets, and riot helmets are being thrown around with wild abandon. Jordan does a great job with scripting these scenes, obviously, but Moore’s kinetic pencils make all of the action look like a violent cartoon, slowed down to the speed you want to view it at.

If you don’t think Luther can run up the side of a truck…you don’t know Luther

This opening salvo also introduces some new characters, though if the past is any indication, they probably won’t be long for Strode’s world. Jordan has made no secret that this is the last ride for Luther, but whether or not we’ll see more stories in this universe remains to be seen.

Luther Strode looks to be going out with a bang, and I’d have it no other way. Luther was a geeky kid, just trying to get a little buffer so he could fend off bullies. Now he’s a true hero, looking to stop any and all comers who would use their secret method to harm the world. If you’ve never read the Luther Strode series, obviously don’t start here, but if you’ve been reading and waiting for this trilogy to end in spectacular fashion, then wait no more. Pick up this double-sized (!) issue today and remind yourself why Jordan and Moore became overnight successes due to one skinny kid and a mysterious workout manual from the 1960s.
