Conspiracies are starting to unfold in The Musketeers as character motivations are revealed and lives are threatened. As the Musketeers strive to deal with new, unexpected enemies, the main villains put other plans into place. Rochefort is starting to make his moves against the crown, but he may have met his match in Milady de Winter, who has plans of her own. The tense situation threatens to explode when a peasant named Emilie appears out of seemingly nowhere, claiming to have visions from God.
“Emilie” is the story of Emilie, a peasant who is prone to sporadic fainting spells. Strangely, these spells seem to bring on visions from God that predict the future and give insight into the Spanish crown. The Musketeers feel the need to get involved in the situation when Emilie’s visions lead to the murder of Spanish citizens. Treville is rightly concerned that Emilie’s group of followers will either attack Spain, or their murderous actions will cause the Spanish to invade France. Neither option is appealing, so Treville sends Aramis in as an undercover agent. This plan seems like a great idea until Queen Anne decides to get involved and also tries to sneak into Emilie’s camp.
While Aramis was working on figuring out Emilie, the other Musketeers were focusing on protecting the Spanish ambassador to France from mysterious attacks. Apparently, a “mysterious” enemy is threatening the ambassador by sending him ears and other gifts, so the Musketeers attempt to protect him from assassination attempts until safe transportation can be arranged. Unfortunately, a mysterious figure is working behind the scenes to ensure that the ambassador doesn’t leave France alive. This greatly complicates matters because the Musketeers have to focus on attacks from every single direction.
“Emilie” was a conspiracy-filled episode, which makes the episode enjoyable. Not much is better than good, old-fashioned backstabbing and political intrigue, and The Musketeers latest episode is full of it. Almost every character in the episode is obsessed with furthering his or her agenda while also trying to kill the other characters. These agendas obviously become a jumbled mess, causing the Musketeers to quickly regroup while striving to protect every loved one around.
Of course, the storyline involving Emilie wasn’t the best. Emilie may have been a decent character, but her mother was absolutely unbearable. Plus, the followers were a little quick to switch sides and attack random people. There didn’t seem to be any second thoughts about the consequences of their actions, but these followers were essentially cultists, so that makes sense.
The Musketeers second season has been strong with the exception of the third episode, and “Emilie” made a return to better quality. Sure, certain characters weren’t amazing, but the rest of the cast made up for it. Plus, the political intrigue was a fantastic part of the story. Failed assassination attempts, bad decisions, and secretive meetings kept the story moving and more entertaining. Finally, some humor, albeit minor, returned to the show. The Musketeers has been an absolute joy to watch, and I’m excited to see how these stories play out.
