The Musketeers: The Prodigal Father – Review

The Musketeers has tackled many sensitive topics during the two seasons, and the latest episode is no different. Not all of these topics are enjoyable or politically correct, but The Musketeers does a decent job handling them. The four Musketeers deal with human slavery, prostitution, and long-lost fathers without being too boring or heavy-handed, and the result is a decent episode that doesn’t start out the best. Thankfully, “The Prodigal Father” gets better before ending in an unexpected way.

During The Musketeers’ latest episode, Porthos and Aramis head out on a mission to find Porthos’ father in a country estate. However, the two Musketeers are greeted by a strange site upon their arrival. A dastardly character named Levesque is beating two women for an unknown reason. As Porthos soon finds out, Levesque is his half-sister’s terrible husband who hates most people. Of course, Porthos is so caught up with learning about his father that he fails to see that something devious is happening. So, Aramis takes the investigation into his own hands and enlists the help of Athos, D’Artagnan, and Treville. This investigation uncovers a hidden prostitution ring for the wealthy members of French society.

While the Musketeers are searching for the heads of the prostitution ring, a lot of political intrigue is taking place in the palace. Rochefort is still attempting to figure out what happened between the queen and Aramis, and Constance is trying to determine who to love between D’Artagnan and the queen’s doctor. Plus, Milady is trying to figure out a way to screw over Rochefort and anyone who gets in her way because she lost favor with the king. So far, Milady is the only person who knows that Rochefort is actually a villainous Spanish spy, but she has yet to figure out what to do about this knowledge.

The latest episode of The Musketeers may have ended strongly, but the first half wasn’t spectacular. Learning about Porthos’ history was entertaining at first, but some of the scenes dragged along for a bit too long. Plus, Porthos’ half-sister was a terrible person who made most scenes worse. Thankfully, the final half of the episode was very entertaining. One scene in particular involved Athos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan infiltrating the prostitution ring to make a daring rescue of some damsels in distress. After that moment, the action ramped up as Porthos began to discover what was really occurring and the other Musketeers tried to keep anything bad from happening.

Oh, so sweet.

Oh, so sweet.

The Musketeers only has two episodes left, so it was upsetting to see an episode that wasn’t amazingly enjoyable. However, “The Prodigal Father” did end in a way that perfectly ramped up excitement for the season’s end. Rochefort in particular had an interesting turn that showed how crazy he truly is. Plus, Rochefort is beginning to take on some of the defining characteristics from his character’s lore. Who knows if Rochefort will live out the season, but at least he will become the character that everyone despises.

Yes, this latest episode of The Musketeers may not have been amazing at first, but it still upheld most of the quality that you would expect from the show. Porthos’ dad was quite an enjoyable character, and he provided another viewpoint to the stories that Treville always tells. It was very interesting seeing how the two characters interacted, especially when they were trying to mold Porthos into a different person. Season two figures to end in an interesting and most likely exciting way, and “The Prodigal Father” only built up excitement for the upcoming episodes.
