Welcome back, everyone! It’s that time again for yet another horror themed Top 5 for the week. This week’s focus is on the most gruesome deaths in a horror game. Believe me when I tell you that there will be blood. Let’s jump right in.
Nick:
5. Brad’s Death – Resident Evil 3
Brad wasn’t all that special of a character within the Resident Evil franchise, but his death was something a bit more memorable than him. The short side of the story is he caught up with Jill Valentine at the Raccoon City police station meeting his certain doom. Nemesis cornered him and impaled Brad by the mouth with his tentacle. He was never able to eat the same after that day…
4. Decapitation – Resident Evil 4
It was always highly infuriating when you lost your head in the midst of fighting a horde of villagers and that one with the chainsaw gets a little too close. If you weren’t too careful, a clean sweep from either the chainsaw man or Garrador (large guy with hand blades) would result in a missing head. Believe me when I tell you it was a bloody mess.
3. Necromorph Puke – Dead Space 2
Something that always grossed me out a bit more than some of the other gruesome, very gruesome, deaths that awaited you in Dead Space was a death by the puker. Isaac Clarke gets his helmet torn off, mouth held open while the puker vomits intensely into Isaac’s mouth. Isaac then vomits himself as he dies in a pool of it. Not the most graceful of deaths, but certainly worth of its place on this list.
2. Becket’s Death – F.E.A.R. 3
Sgt. Michael Becket, the main character and victim of F.E.A.R. 2, was dealt with a pretty unfortunate demise. Not only was he raped by Alma in the previous game, but when Point Man and Paxton Fettel catch up with him things go from bad to ugly. Fettel possesses Becket and eventually causes him to explode from the inside out. Talk about going out in a bang.
1. Adam’s Death – Dead Rising
Adam was one of many psychopaths you met along the way in Dead Rising who many may remember as the psycho clown from hell. Not only did killing him give you the best weapon(s) you could find in the game, but it gave you a feeling of satisfaction when he fell to his doom. Adam basically falls to his knees, and whilst carrying a mini chainsaw in both hands, falls on top of the still running chainsaw. As you watch him cut straight through his chest and jump right back into the game, you might feel a little disgusted, but truth be told I felt damn happy once I started using those same chainsaws to fend off zombies.
Sean:
5. The Hunters claw – Resident Evil
While the Hunter itself is pretty ridiculous looking – a cross between a bipedal lizard and a frog – what they can do to you is pretty gnarly. If your health is low enough, these things will remove your head with a swipe of their over-sized claw. Sending a geyser of blood spouting from where Chris Redfield’s head used to be. It may seem tame by today’s standards and the dated, blocky graphics don’t help, but in 1996, it was revolutionary and gruesome.
4. Pretty much every time Issac dies – Dead Space
Not content with one or two animations, Dead Space offers all sorts of grisly ways in which Issac meats his end. Chopped up in fans, dismembered by Necromorphs, and even being turned into one by a parasite removing his head and setting up shop. I would let myself die in certain situations just to see what would happen.
3. Bloater kills Joel – The Last of Us
Much like the Clickers, a Bloater offers instant death if it even reaches you, only shivs can’t save you. Once a Bloater gets his hands on Joel, it digs its fingers into Joel – right in between his eyes and skill and proceeds to rip his face apart. A cascade of dark blood runs down Joel’s face as he writhes in excruciatingly realistic agony before the screen cuts to black.
2. Laura kills Sebastian – The Evil Within
Laura can’t be killed by traditional means, which is to say, bullets are completely useless on her. Instead she must be lured into traps in either the environment or of Sebastian’s own Agony Crossbow. She also won’t give up chase until a certain event triggered in the game so basically it’s up to the player to keep Sebastian alive during the section. Doing so isn’t easy and I got real accustomed to seeing Laura throw Sebastian on the ground and pummel his face into a bloody pulp of sinew and skull fragments.
1. Leon loses his head to a chainsaw – Resident Evil 4
I’ll never forget the first time I faced off against the chainsaw wielding, burlap sack wearing enemy in Resident Evil. A tough as nails enemy that offers instant death if he reaches you. And not just any death, oh no. A chainsaw to the throat that sends Leon’s head on a completely different path from his body.
So there you have some of the We The Nerdy staffers’ picks for most Gruesome Deaths in Horror Games. Can you think of any standouts? Let us know in the comments!
