Top 10 Sci-Fi Weapons in Video Games

Science Fiction is just as strong and vivid in the video game world as its ever been. There are many factors that make these Sci-Fi games so great, but for me something that really stood out was the weaponry we see. Although it might not always be something quite grounded in reality, science fiction has brought us some interesting and amazing weapons that we’re going to explore.

10. Morph-O-Ray (Ratchet and Clank)

Morph-O-Ray

The Morph-O-Ray was the first of many in a long line of morphing weapons that made its way into the Ratchet and Clank series. What made this simple looking weapon so effective was pure fact that it turned enemies into chickens. Yes, chickens. It worked on nearly every enemy as well, with the exception of bosses.  The series didn’t stop there as they added more weapons that changed enemies into ducks, sheep, etc. Rest assure that if you ever need chickens, Ratchet and Clank will be there to help.

9. The Laptop Gun (Perfect Dark)

LaptopGun

Is it a gun or a laptop? The short answer is its both. Perfect Dark’s Laptop Gun is both a fully functional laptop (although the memory is a quarter of what it should be), a fully function submachine gun, and a sentry gun. Obviously one of the more creative weapons of the bunch, the Laptop Gun was an instant favorite.

8. Omni-Blade (Mass Effect 3)

omni-blade

Although omni-tools have been present throughout the Mass Effect trilogy, the Omni-Blade didn’t make its way over until the 3rd installment of the series where it was featured on the cover. Most of the classes used some form of the Omni-Blade to melee your foes into submission. What made this weapon truly special was its entire physical being. Its one part hologram and one part physical weapon. Mass Effect 3 had its downers, but rest assure that the Omni-Blade was not one of them.

7. Lancer (Gears of War series)

lancer

So what do you do to make a boring assault rifle interesting again? Strap a chainsaw to it. There were a log of cool weapons in the Gears of War series, but the Lancer was basically the bread and butter of what made its combat so brutal. And just why wouldn’t it be? You get to tear anyone and everyone in half with a chainsaw that just so happens to also be your gun. Next time you’re fighting off the Locust horde, rev up and watch the chunks fly!

6. Gravity Gun (Half-Life 2)

gravitygun

A weapon that inspired many iterations amongst other games, Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun was one to remember. With the ability to pick up all sorts of objects, defying gravity, this weapon instantly found its usefulness. Then you have the ability to shoot that object at intense speed.

5. Portal Gun (Portal series)

portalgun

Quite possibly the best way to be in two places at once. The portal gun was an amazing game changer that really brought a new level of puzzle solving to the Portal series. As the name might suggest, it shoots out portals. Other than its sleek look, it really adds a new element of depth to reality.

4. BFG 9000 (Doom series)

bfg-3

Doom has always had one iconic weapon that stood out against the pack. In fact, it was so iconic that the 2012 remaster of Doom 3 was named after it. That weapon was the Big F*ckin Gun, or BFG for short. Its size was equally, if not too small, for the amount of destruction it left in its wake. Giant green balls of plasma seem to be the most effective way of killing demonic underlings in space. The BFG also had homage paid to it in Quake II, Quake III Arena (in the form of BFG 10k), and Rage (in form of the Authority Pulse Cannon, which fired BFG rounds).

3. Plasma Cutter (Dead Space series)

plasmacutter

Using an engineering weapon to kill space zombies has never felt so right. Dead Space’s Plasma Cutter quickly made its way up the ladder as amazing sci-fi weaponry. According to the game’s lore, it’s really meant to help an engineer in his maintenance duties. Early in the series you find out just how effective the Plasma Cutter is at “strategically dismembering” necromorphs. Yes, its alternate attack is just a way to turn it at a 90 degree angle, but that’s what makes it so great! Decapitating enemies has never been easier!

2. M6 Magnum Pistol Series (Halo Series)

halopistol

We’ve seen many changes to Halo’s iconic pistol over the years, for better or worse. Its painfully obvious that the original M6D, was among the strongest and most sought after weapons within the Halo series. It was originally outfitted with a 2x scope that lost its way in Halo 2 and 3, but made its way back in the fourth installment. Why use a sniper when you can use a more effective pistol in a fraction of the time? The M6 series pistols haven’t always been great, but always hold a special place in Halo fans’ hearts.

1. The Bane (Borderlands 2)

Commonly referred to “the most annoying gun in the world” and with plenty of reason to. The Bane series of weapons is a Hyperion weapon within the world of Borderlands 2. Although the variation of it you pick up might be different from player to player, the end result ends up always being the same. A weapon that not only slows your movement, but makes the most obnoxious sounds while it fires (even if in-game volume is turned down to 0).
