We Can Never Go Home

We Can Never Go Home really struck a chord with me this year. I didn’t get on board right on at the beginning – I think it was issue two or three when I started reading it on a monthly basis. We were sent review copies of the first two issues, and I dove in, and absolutely adored it. There’s something about the lead characters Duncan and Madison that really got its hooks into me – and it wasn’t their superpowers. In fact, the superpowers often felt secondary to everything else going on in the book.
It was really the developing character dynamic that got to me. How the characters interacted with one another grew a ton as the book progressed; Patrick Klindon and Matthew Rosenberg create two excellent characters that I really want to spend more time with. Sure, the superpowers are the crux of the story, and are a part of the character development. But this is a very different take on traditional superhero comics. It’s the realistic, gritty superhero story that The Big Two have been trying to nail for years – little did they know, all they had to do was turn to two relatively unknown creators.
Character driven books like this one are exactly what I look for in comics, and We Can Never Go Home does that exceptionally well. I truly cannot wait to continue following the characters and story next year.
