We the Nerdy’s Top Five Movie Spaceships

For as long as film has existed, science fiction has been a hallmark genre. And what is more symbolic of sci-fi than space faring vehicles of all shapes and sizes? From sprawling space operas to sci-fi comedies, there’s rarely a “hard” sci-fi movie that lacks a spaceship of some sort. And so, why not count down our top five? So, without further ado, I hereby represent the WtN Movies’ team inaugural top five list: the top five spaceships (from movies, of course).

5. The Heart of Gold

Appears in: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

A Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

The Heart of Gold is undoubtedly the most unusual spaceship that has appeared in a movie. Although the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was a terrible movie, the Heart of Gold was arguably the best part of that movie. The ship is powered by an infinite improbability drive. What exactly does that mean? No one is really sure, because the explanation is quite ridiculous. The ship travels through every conceivable destination at once in every universe at once. In the movie, the characters become yarn dolls briefly. Another reason why the Heart of Gold tops this list is because it has one of the best robots in movie history, Marvin the Paranoid Android. But that’s a list for another time. – Roshan Krishnan

4. The X-Wing

Appears in: A New Hope; The Empire Strikes Back; Return of the Jedi

X-Wing

I have always been a Luke Skywalker guy as opposed to Han Solo being my favorite of Star Wars’ main heroes. So when you put Luke in this Earth-like dynamic looking craft that saves us from the Death Star, how am I not supposed to fall in love with this futuristic piece of machinery? A lot of rebels lost their lives in these ships but heck, there’s no better way to go than being blown up in space in an X-Wing. – Jake Morris

3. The Axiom

Appears in: Wall-E

Axiom

The Axiom is the pinnacle of what we dream of in space travel. Sure, it’s piloted by a psychopathic robot, but that hardly matters considering this ship was able to support a growing, changing population for hundreds of years. Not only that, but these people were comfortable and (relatively) happy even in the face of not having a planet to call home. Axiom is, hands down, the best sci-fi ship simply because its occupants lived in safety and comfort. That’s more than any other ship on this list can claim. – Samantha Liggett

2. The Starship Enterprise

Appears in: Star Trek; Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan; Star Trek: Nemesis

Enterprise

Despite making a name for itself on the small screen, the significance of the Enterprise in the field of movies cannot be understated. Even in the bad Star Trek films (which, to be fair, is most of them), the Enterprise is still awesome. The ship has been modified many times over the years, each time to fit a new generation of Star Trek fans. Despite these changes, the ship has continued to symbolize  humanity’s progress, even in the more popcorn-y reboot films of recent memory. It’s this symbolic nature of the ship, and the characters that inhabited it, that makes it worthy of a spot on this list. Plus, you know, it’s had some pretty cool action scenes. – Jean-Luc Botbyl

1. The Millenium Falcon

Millenium Falcon

Appears in: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi

The Millennium Falcon is the coolest ship in the galaxy. Seriously, this YT-1300 light freighter has been modified to become the fastest ship in the galaxy, and it’s armed to the gills with advanced weaponry. Basically, the Falcon can get out of every situation imaginable using a combination of weapons, speed, and maneuverability. The Falcon may not be the most reliable ship around, but it’s like an old muscle car. It may not work all of the time, but the Falcon/muscle car still holds a special place in your heart because it’s so cool. Plus, the Falcon has a gigantic dog as the co-pilot. You can’t beat that. – John Newby
