With the sad demise of Star Wars: The Clone Wars at the hand of Disney, there was a time when the future of Star Wars on TV was uncertain at best. But thanks to a killer presentation at New York Comic-Con, a great teaser trailer, and a nearly unmatched creative team, Star Wars’ presence on the small screen is back in Force. Sure, there’s not that much content yet, but what we do have gives me a lot of hope for Dave Filoni’s latest foray into the a galaxy far, far away.
Am I expecting a sequel to The Clone Wars? No, not at all. In fact, I highly doubt we’ll see any story lines from The Clone Wars carry over into Rebels. But you know what? It’s time we got some new stories, especially in this unexplored era of the Star Wars time line. Between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope is an era that’s largely empty, except for the two Force Unleashed games and a couple EU novels. Of course, that is part of what makes it the perfect era for a new TV show. The creators have a large amount of creative freedom, especially since they don’t have to worry about contradicting other media, like The Clone Wars often did.
No, this is the perfect era for a TV show to take place in. It’s like an open world sandbox in a video game; nearly no limitations, and the freedom to create unique stories for new characters. Yes, there is a timeline they have to fit the story into, but who’s to say that they won’t go past A New Hope? The implications are certainly interesting.
However, now is not the time for such wild speculations. Now is the time to get pumped for Rebels! This is an era familiar to many, and is possibly the darkest time for the Star Wars Universe, barring only the Yuuzhan Vong War. This is a period of time when the light in the galaxy has all but been extinguished, except for small pockets of rebels standing up against the Empire’s tyrannical rule. For the first time ever, we’re truly going to get to see how this plays out. We’ll get to see how the universe ended up where it was in A New Hope.
The time period in which this show is set to take place alone is enough reason to be excited. We’ll get to see the creative minds of both Dave Filoni and Greg Weisman at work in the Star Wars universe, as well as return to a universe that we all know and love from the original Star Wars movies. Be excited, you guys!
