Inhumans Prime #1 Review

Written by: Al Ewing

Drawn by: Ryan Sook

Published by: Marvel Comics

Inhumans Prime #1 continues the story directly after the ending of Inhumans vs X-Men, and sets up a new status quo for the Inhumans.

This issue is written by Al Ewing. For the most part, it’s a serviceable issue with some fun bits. It does rehash the events in IvX a little too much. It deals with what the next step for the Inhumans is after the Terrigen cloud was dispersed, but it also gives us a little bit of insight into the political structure of the Inhuman. The action scenes are serviceable even though they do feel a bit forced. At least they’re fun.

Ewing is joined by Ryan Sook, who is probably one of the most underused artists in comics. He always brings his A-game, and this issue is no exception. The art is very fluid, both in the action sequences and the facial expressions in slower character driven moments. The best part of Sook’s art is that it is perfect for action sequences, but the slow moments also benefit from it. This is mostly seen in the sequences between Black Bolt and Maximus, where the hesitation in Black Bolt’s face is clear as he made a difficult decision.

Inhumans Prime both serves as a primer for Inhumans vs X-men as well as progressing the story, with the arrival of a character we haven’t seen in a while! That was a pleasant surprise and it’s going to be interesting to see the direction Marvel takes the character, especially in the world they have created now. If nothing else, this book should serve as a reminder as to just how much the Marvel universe has changed in the last five or so years. Some of those changes were for the better, while others go a bit too far.

Overall, this was a decent one-shot. If this book is any indication, upcoming Inhumans stories might be interesting rides. Get hyped for the next era of Inhuman books.
