My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Friends Forever #11

The last My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Friends Forever comic I reviewed wound up being a massive bust. It was cliché, boring, and…well, just really generic. Nothing fun there. The latest My Little Pony comic happens to be a Friends Forever issue as well and, if nothing else, it’s absolutely adorable.

MLP:FiM:FF #11 (Ugh that acronym!) focuses on Rainbow Dash and Spitfire, both of whom have an enormous amount of personality. The former is a fan favorite for her outgoing attitude (and awesome color scheme), and the latter is the leader of the Wonderbolts, which act like Equestria’s Blue Angels.

And both are tasked with teaching young Pegasus ponies how to fly!

Okay, so it’s one of “those” stories, where one character is terrible around children and the other is an ace but not as knowledgeable. Wacky hijunks ensue.

Like the last MLP:FiM:FF (Ugh that acronym x2), the story here is fairly predictable. What makes this issue work, at least moreso than the previous one, is that Rainbow Dash and Spitfire have the personality to carry a comic book. They’re entertaining to watch and follow, and Spitfire’s breakdowns are quite funny, especially given her military background.

But what sells this issue is the art style. I was surprised, shocked even, when I started reading because the way these characters are drawn is very different from what I’ve been used to seeing. I can’t even describe it, so here’s a picture of Rainbow Dash this time around:

She’s adorable, right? All the characters look like this, and the facial expressions all hold so much silly emotion. It’s great. The little Phillies are also very, very cute.

MLP:FiM:FF #11 isn’t perfect, and honestly, its generic plot hurts it quite a bit. But I’ll be damned, the art style and execution here are both very charming. Art has always been a saving grace for MLP:FiM, and that continues here. Couple that with some fairly strong personalities, and yeah, I had fun.
