Savage Dragon #195 Review

Publisher: Image Comics

Written by: Erik Larsen

Art by: Erik Larsen

Erik Larsen starts his letter column at the end of the newest issue of Savage Dragon #195 by stating that this is technically the 200th issue if you are to include the original mini-series. Let me start by saying that is a truly incredible achievement for any book. It is also a book that has unfortunately seemed to have slipped off the radar in recent times. This was in fact the first issue I have ever read of this title, and I have to say I want more.

What seems so amazing is the fact that even though this is so far into a comic book series, the book seemed so easy to pick up and just read. Yes of course there was a lot of back story stuff that I was so au fait with, but I didn’t really mind either. It would appear that Savage Dragon has recently gone in a relatively new direction, which may have been why it was so easy to jump on. This issue made that big number 195 at the front of the book not so scary, which is nice to see why start from a new number 1 when you can continue a already perfect numbering system.

The art in the book is also really neat, not being familiar with the book the art was relatable and fitted nicely with the already fun nature of this issue. You can tell that it is a full creator owned book with Larsen taking all the responsibility for both words and pictures. The story fits the art and the art fits the story with perfection.

I want more, I want to go back and find early issues of this, I want to see what happened before the big new direction change. I want to know how a book successfully gets to its 195th issue, and I want to know why all comics aren’t this fun to pick up as a new reader.
