Winter World #3 Review

Post-apocalyptic scenarios are very popular in modern media. Many movies, video games, and TV shows cover the endless possibilities for a world destroyed by mankind, but comics have the ability to create more imaginative worlds using well-written dialogue and beautiful art. Winter World #3 continues a series created by Chuck Dixon that imagines a world destroyed by winter.

Winter World #3 follows a man named Scully and a fourteen-year-old girl Wynn as they travel across the frozen wasteland in search of Wynn’s parents. Unfortunately, they are captured by a group of survivors who are threatening to kill them so a secret location won’t be revealed. This location is a wonderful oasis of vegetation and warm weather hidden in the middle of the wintery wasteland.

Of course, no one really knows the origins of this oasis known as La Nina, but a small group of villagers strives to protect the oasis while gathering resources for a sustainable future. Additionally, the villagers have a new theory about fixing the frozen planet using an old truck and a book written by Al Gore. In order to achieve this goal, the villagers need to convince Scully and Wynn to stay with the group instead of moving on in search of Wynn’s parents. This could be a tricky endeavor.

Winter World #3 is a pretty interesting story set against a cool backdrop. The winter wasteland mixed with a hidden oasis is more unique, and it is created very well using Butch Guice’s art. The characters aren’t amazing, but the setting is enough to make the issue worth reading. The continuing existence of the La Nina oasis is perplexing, but I’m more interested by the random character that is secretly darting across the wintery wasteland. As a newcomer to the series, I would like to know who the character is. Hopefully, the continuing issues will shed light on this character while still including the unique settings.
