We The Nerdy’s very own Adrienne Crean had the honor of having some time with Nicolas Selma, the artist behind the Tomb Raider comic by Dark Horse. The up and coming comic artist talks about video games, Lara Croft herself, and how he gets his inspiration.
We The Nerdy: I want to start off with saying, I appreciate very much to have the opportunity to speak with you. I had the chance to review Tomb Raider #5 and loved it, so this is truly an honor. Okay! Lets get down to business!
Nicolas Selba: Hi Adrienne! Nice to e-meet you
WTN: Let’s start off with a video game related question. We all know you have been working with Gail Simone with the new Tomb Raider comic. Did you play the games, and if so, what was your favorite one?
NS: Yes, I played the last one,Tomb Raider the Beginning and for me it’s been one of the best games I’ve ever played on PS3, I loved the development of the characters and the overall story. To know the beginnings of great heroes is something that excites me a lot, to know what where and are their motivations to make them do what they do it’s just great.
WTN: What do you enjoy most about being apart of this series?
NS: I consider Lara Croft to be one of the most strongest characters in terms of history, attitude and strength. So for me it is an honor to contribute in the development of the transformation of Lara, starting as an innocent girl and ending up to be a legend.
WTN: Where do you get your Lara Croft inspiration?
NS: I’ve been getting a lot of the inspiration from the last game, I try to be as faithful as I can to the character, I like to be consistent, so the followers can enjoy her in the game and also in the comic, like if it was one same story.
WTN: Do you have any current or upcoming projects that you’ve been working on?
NS: I’ve been working on S.H.O.O.T. First, it’s about a group of agents who fight against creatures they don’t believe in. It’s a project that I’ve been doing with my co-creator Justin Aclin, and it’s also published by Dark Horse, we’ve been very happy with this project and with the results we’ve gotten. We made a great quality product thanks to the work of our editor, Dave Marshall. If you haven’t read it yet I highly recommend it, Aclin has a great sense of humor and very good ideas that will surprise you. the TPB is already out there, and also on numbers 34, 35 and 36 of Dark Horse Presents you can find 3 new stories of the series.
WTN: What or who influenced you to get into this business?
NS- When I was a kid my father would buy me comics, he was a big Batman and Superman fan and thought me about comics! that fomented my passion for drawing. I would come up with super heroes and draw their stories
Later on when I finished high school I started to take drawing more seriously and studied for it more professionally. One of my professors was Ruben Meriggi, who worked for Marvel at a time, and did comics in Argentina, he thought me how to get into the business. And from that day on I took it as something achievable and not just a childhood fantasy.
You can catch Nicolas Selba on art in Tomb Raider each month from Dark Horse, and make sure to stay tuned to We The Nerdy for all your reviews and news!
