In the fourth issue of Adam Cadwell’s Blood Blokes, things are really starting to pick up for the punky vampires. This issue has a lot more plot happening, which is good news as we’re now heading in to the second half of the series. So far, readers have met Vince, a slacker university drop out who has been turned in to a vampire, and is being helped by a group of older vampires. The first issues introduced us to the characters and show how Vince is doing in his first couple of days as a new vamp. The comic is definitely comedic, and is a fresh and entertaining take on the ever-so-popula
r vampire trend.
This issue begins with Vince stuck out in the daylight and about to collapse when Arianna appears to rescue him. We are then introduced to a new, mysterious character who is trying to find information about the bat that turned Vince into a vampire. The plot alternates between Vince, recovering from his outing and going on his first hunting trip with Douglas, and this new guy who is introducing himself to people as Jimmy.
Cadwell writes in a lot of interesting background information about vampires in this issue when Douglas is giving Vince the low-down on the rules. Most of it is pretty standard vampire fare, but the clarification that one must cut off all their mortal ties and be sneaky about being a vampire is important, especially when there are bars open that cater to vampires and it seems like they may be able to live out in the open. It also hints that there is some sort of vampire authority, which I think it going to be relevant to Jimmy and his investigation.
While there is a much more mysterious element added with Jimmy, the focus is still on the day-to-day goings on of the vampires and how they interact with each other and argue about whose turn it is to go to the store. This issue doesn’t have quite as many witty quips in it, but they are still sprinkled generously throughout. The art in this issue is consistent with the last few issues, with Cadwell turning up the noir a bit more for the introduction of Jimmy. Overall, this is a really great continuation of the story so far, and the next one should be just as good.
