Contra: Operation Galuga Quick Time Review

Developer: WayForward

Publisher: Konami, Konami Digital Entertainment

Release date: February 21, 2024

Available on: Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S (reviewed on the S)

A remake of the 1987 original, Contra: Operation Galuga brings the series to modern consoles with updated systems and new stages. The game can be played solo or up to 4 player co-op. There are three difficulty options, and three modes of play. Story Mode is the full experience, with eight stages and fully voiced cut scenes. Arcade is basically Story Mode without the cut scenes, and you can use characters unlocked in Story Mode as well as choose your music (if you have old Contra or Castlevania saves, the game will note that and make available their respective soundtracks to use). Challenge Mode is the most difficult, as you need to complete stages under certain conditions, such as taking no damage or completing the stage without firing a shot.

PROS

Decent, fully voice acted story

Wide variety of weapons to use

Three modes of play to choose from

Three levels of difficulty

Replayability with using different characters

Good controls

CONS

Can be hard, even on easiest difficulty

Some levels feel like they go on too long

Can get repetitive

A nice reimagining of the first title of the series, Contra: Operation Galuga is a nice return to form. It has a great 80s action movie vibe, and a couple of interesting stages. The game can be hard, even on the easiest difficulty level, but fans of the series know what to expect and the game delivers on that front. While accessible to newcomers, long time fans may get more enjoyment from the game. The game can be finished in an afternoon, but there is replayability through the three different modes and use of multiple characters. Definitely worth it if you’re looking for a nice arcade experience.
