Detective Comics 967 Review

Written by: James Tynion IV

Art by: Alvaro Martinez, Raul Fernandez

Published by: DC Comics

Lonely Place of Living is a great companion piece to the essential Lonely Place of Dying!

Tynion continues the story in such a fantastic way this issue. It not only progresses the story forward, but acknowledges other events in the DC universe. He puts a timeframe on when events are taking place. This development actually makes multiple books work better, as they show how deep the Oz’s web was. What Tynion does is reduce the importance of reading both Action and Detective while adding gravitas to the events of both.

It’s rare that a writer, especially at DC or Marvel, to take time to tie up loose ends.  That is the attention to detail that helps this book rise to a level of excellence rarely seen. There some fantastic moments between Tim and Alfred as well, which genuinely show how much the Wayne family cares for one another.

Alvaro Martinez  takes over for Eddy Barrows in this issue. Usually, there would be an evident difference between the art styles. Instead, Martinez’s style only contains subtle differences. The important sequences are handled with care, and Martinez illustrates a love for the characters through his art. More importantly, he knows how to draw fluid action, and the book is never boring as a result.

Detective Comics has been a smashing success since the beginning of Rebirth, and this arc adds to the Rebirth lore quite a bit; especially since the reveal of “Conner” last issue which could mean a return of the fan favorite character. Anybody that is a fan of all of the cast should keep an eye on these pages for further developments!
