Digital Card games have been gaining in popularity with the introduction of Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone, but these are only two options for those who enjoy card-based games. One newer game that you may not be aware of is The Regret of Vitrerran from indie developer Dual Wield Software.
The Regret of Vitrerran is a card-based RPG currently in the middle of its Kickstarter campaign. The creators of The Regret of Vitrerra, Chad and Joe Waller, combine multiple elements to create a unique experience drawing inspiration from beloved games. Their Kickstarter page lists some important information about the game:
- You can play through the eight levels in almost any order like Megaman
- Combat boils down to knocking your opponents off the battlefield like Super Smash Bros
- Attacks are delivered in the form of cards like Baten Kaitos
- Magic is divided into elements like Final Fantasy or Pokemon
- You collect cards and build a deck like Magic: the Gathering
In order to get more information about The Regret of Vitrerran, We The Nerdy tracked down Chad Waller and pestered him with questions.
WTN – What was the main inspiration for Regret of Vitrerran?
CW – Honestly, there really wasn’t any one thing. We started off the project by discussing iOS games and how a solid action game could be done with only a touch screen. That led to using cards as a basis for attacks, and that led to the game itself.
WTN – How did you come up with the unique character designs?
CW – The character designs primarily stemmed from the design locations. We wanted a swamp level, and figured frog and salamanders would make for a good populace. A fire level should be populated by dragon-esque characters. When I play fantasy games, I like having fantasy characters. I never pick humans. For Vitrerran, I wanted to do away with the normal dwarves and elves and make up my own races. Joe did the actual design work though.
WTN – Will there be ways to increase the weight limits for characters?
CW – Yes, through a stat currently called “strength”.
WTN – You mentioned in the Kickstarter description that there were four main heroes from the larger kingdom and the four minor heroes. How are these arranged, and will all eight be available at the game’s start?
CW – The characters are arranged by their magic affinities. The first four—the primaries—are fire, ice, swamp, and sand. The secondary characters are water, forest, wind, and assassin. The characters are split up based on the complexity of their playstyles, with the secondary characters being a bit more involved. They will not be available from the get go, though we plan on releasing them for free.
WTN – What made you decide to go away from turn-based combat?
CW – That’s sort of answered in the first question. We started off making a real-time action game, and it stayed that way.
WTN – Will managing the battlefield with three grids be similar to a tower defense game, or will it be completely different?
CW – No. It will be different (we have a gameplay breakdown on our Kickstarter page). There are also only two grids; the third part of the battlefield is the playing field itself.
At this moment, The Regret of Vitrerran has almost two weeks left in the campaign with only $385 raised. Potential supporters can go check out the campaign and watch the game’s trailer. Dual Wield Software also included a combat overview trailer that showcases a standard battle.
