Can a myth be true? Well, it is for Edward in Edward Scissorhands #1, which takes place two generations after the movie of the same name.

Edward Scissorhands, an artificial man, lives in a castle outside of a suburban town where he was banished to two generations prior.  Meagan Boggler, the teenage granddaughter of Edward’s first love Kim Boggler, wonders if he really is a myth after all of the stories her grandmother used to tell her about him as a child.  Her mother constantly tells her that her grandmother told tall tales and that Edward Scissorhands is a myth, but Meagan refuses to believe it.

I was highly anticipating reading the comic book adaption of the movie and  I like that Edward’s personality hasn’t changed.  He’s still the same confused artificial man who feels incomplete because his creator, a “brilliant” inventor, died while creating him leaving him without hands and alone after not being able to see his first love (Kim).  His curiosity (and loneliness) causes him to start digging through experiments that were abandoned by his creator, which awakens an experiment that he sees is missing a piece that can complete it as well.

This comic not only brought back nostalgia of watching the movie adaption of Edward Scissorhands as a teen, it was a perfect continuation of where the movie left off.  Edward feeling lonely and finding an incomplete project like himself and Kim’s granddaughter wondering if Edward is real, it’s perfect for fans that wanted to know what happened years after the movie adaption.

Because of how animated Drew Rausch’s art in the comic is, it tends to bring out the key emotions in the characters: loneliness, sadness, and inquisition.  This intensifies Kate Leth’s excellent storytelling, helping the reader relate to the characters feelings.

I’m excited to see how Edward’s story unfolds as well as to see he and Meagan meet.  I’ve always wondered if the small young girl that Kim spoke to would ever grow up to meet Edward and now we will see if that’s possible.
