On an outer-space adventure, they got hit by cosmic rays. The four were changed forever, in some most fantastic ways. No need to fear, they’re here. Just call for Four! Fantastic Four! That’s right Marvel faithful, the Fantastic Four are coming back to a movie theater near you. The long gestating franchise reboot has finally settled on a cast, reports Variety.
First off, we have Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic. Teller, who turns 27 today, is from such films as The Spectacular Now and 21 and Over. In the comics, Reed Richards is the eldest member of the team and is a genius scientist. It is due to his scientific endeavors that the team gains their powers from cosmic rays. Reed Richards was previously played by Ian Gruffudd.
Secondly, we have Kate Mara as Susan Storm, the Invisible Woman. Mara, best known for her work on House of Cards, the Netflix original series, is the eldest member of the cast at 31. In the comics, Sue is the heart of the Fantastic Four, always guiding them in the right direction. Jessica Alba played her role in the previous releases.
Michael B. Jordan, long rumored for a role in the film, will play Johnny Storm, the Human Torch. Jordan, also 27, is best known for Friday Night Lights on NBC, as well as Chronicle. Jordan represents a departure from the source material, as Johnny Storm is Caucasian in the comics. Beyond that, he is the younger brother of Sue Storm, and his casting presumably means a change in the Storm family lineage. Chris Evans played Johnny in the elder franchise.
Lastly we have Jamie Bell as Benjamin Grimm, the Thing. Jamie Bell, 27, is from such noted works as King Kong and The Adventures of Tin Tin. Ben Grimm is Reed Richard’s best friend, who is mutated and turned into a monstrous Thing in the comics. He is the most urban of the four, and the most likely to start a fight. Despite this, he puts family and friends before all else. Michael Chiklis played him previously.
The film, which aims for a June 15, 2015 release, is being directed by Josh Trank (Chonicle).
