Giant-Size Little Marvel AVX #1 Review

Written by: Skottie Young

Art by: Skottie Young and Jean-Francois Beaulieu

Publisher: Marvel

Skottie Young’s Marvel variants are instantly recognizable and some of the most popular around. Young and Marvel teased us before with one-shot issues such as “A-Babies Vs. X-Babies”, but thanks to “Secret Wars”, Young has been given the opportunity to create a section of Battleworld taken from his baby world. What he and and his colorist, Jean-Francois Beaulieu have produced is a series dedicated to comedy and fun; something to lighten the mood against all the suspense other tie-ins have been creating.

Taking place in Marville, GSLMAVX (…) is basically about toddler versions of both traditional Marvel villains and heroes. The toddlers are split into two competitive groups: the Avengers and the X-Men. The main characteristic they share is their competitive spirit and their need to one-up each other. There is no real danger or plot to speak of here and that is the intention of the book. There are no mysteries, no apocalypse nor any world-saving, just pure unadulterated fun.

Young’s script is packed full of funny quips and jokes throughout the whole issue, with pretty much every joke sticking the landing and some insanely adorable art (Young’s version of Magik wins everything). The colors are bright and playful and compliment the insane amount of work Young put into the pencils and inks. There are funny little details everywhere, including a sound effect following Thor’s hammer that says “KABOOMETH”. If you’ve read Young’s “Rocket Raccoon”, you know just how much of a blast both his writing and art can be.

There isn’t much to say here except that if you like fun and comedy, you should read *breaths in* “Giant-Size Little Marvel: AvX#1”. It’s what you expected out of a Skottie Young book and that’s all I could’ve asked for.
