Marvel Announces Spider-Gwen Ongoing

Building off of the Edge of Spider-verse one shot, Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez will be bringing Spider-Gwen to the realm of ongoing series. Initially announced at the Spider-Man panel at New York Comic Con, new details concerning the series have been revealed. As we already know, this series will take place in the alternate universe that was created for the one shot in which we were introduced to this character.

Further building off of the one shot, writer Jason Latour said the following about the book’s villains in an interview with Marvel.com. Keep in mind that this quote could be considered a spoiler to those who have not read that issue.

We’ll absolutely see an ‘evil’ Matt Murdock (a.k.a. Daredevil), and the Kingpin. I’m a huge old school Daredevil fan, so I get this real sick thrill out of twisting him around and making him the villain. There’s also a new twist a character you’d immediately identify as a villain, who we’re re-casting as a more complex threat to Gwen and Captain Stacy—a character coming at her from within the system…

This announcement further shows Marvel’s willingness to respond to the desires of fans, but also to sales numbers. The official press release calls the Spider-Gwen’s first appearance a “sellout introductory issue,” and Senior Editor Nick Lowe added his own comments concerning the reasons that this character got an ongoing:

It’s a rare character that gets the public outcry that Spider-Gwen got. From the sell-out of Gwen’s first appearance to the groundswell on Twitter we’re excited to bring more Spider-Gwen into the world with the creators who started it all!

Spider-Gwen (yes, that is the name of the book) will hit shelves at a comic book store near you in February of 2015.
