Mulaney: In the Name of the Mother, and the Son, and the Holy Andre – Review

As Mulaney progresses, I find myself enjoying the show more and more. However, I’m not sure if the show is getting better, or if I am experiencing a weird form of Stockholm Syndrome. Honestly, I don’t want to know because I’m just along for the ride as Mulaney goes through its season.

The latest episode, In the Name of the Mother, and the Son, and the Holy Andre, focuses on two different storylines. The first storyline revolves around John as he is nervously anticipating a visit from his super religious mother. Obviously, John isn’t the most religious person on the planet, so he lies to his mother and swears that he goes to a Catholic church led by a young, hip priest named Father Trey. Unfortunately, This lie doesn’t work very well, so John goes with plan “B” and introduces his mother to Lou Cannon.

The other storyline follows Jane as she experiments with a hip, new birth control pill so she can date a fancy lawyer. However, Jane’s previous experience with birth control pills has never been fantastic, so Motif is understandably concerned about her. This plot actually makes the rest of Mulaney’s latest episode really weird. Sure, a story about birth control isn’t that strange; the side effects of the birth control are the weird aspect. Jane starts to exhibit…Andre-ish personality traits, which is a concern. On the other side, Andre realizes that he has been taking the birth control as an acne medication, so he stops taking the pills to a very shocking result.

In the Name of the Mother, and the Son, and the Holy Andre was a pretty entertaining episode, based solely on the super weird birth control storyline. Actually, the smaller story about John and his mother was pretty entertaining as well. John’s mother spends part of the episode hanging out with a flirtatious Lou Cannon, which creates some of the entertaining moments. Jane had some fluctuating scenes because of her mood swings, and some of those actually worked, especially the ones involving Andre.

Mulaney is either getting better, or I am developing a weird attraction to it. Either way, I’m enjoying the season more and more. Plus, who can complain about a random cameo from Pete Holmes as a hip priest. It was a weird casting choice, but Pete Holmes is really entertaining, so I don’t care. Mulaney is also including fewer lines from John’s stand up comedy as the season progresses, but the included lines are almost too noticeable. Hopefully, the writing keeps changing for the better. I do have faith that Mulaney can end up being a vastly improved show, if Fox gives it a chance.
