Wow, another great issue of this relatively new series. It’s so rare for a new series to grab readers so quickly and pack a powerful punch both emotionally and in terms of overall action and suspense. I wasn’t even meant to be reviewing this book this week, but after reading it I thought I ought to spread the word of how good this book is.
This series so far about a small town that has bread a huge amount of serial killers, is just exceeding all expectations I had for a series like this. In the space of four issues it has easily become one of the most eagerly awaited books of the month for myself and a huge number of comic book fans.
Williamson masterfully creates a huge amount of suspense and drama, and continues to build an excellent array of characters. This book could be described as an ensemble with Finch and Crane perhaps being the leads. However, I think the lead in this book is the overall story. I know that sounds strange, but the drive of the narrative really is at the forefront of the book and we the reader along with Finch and Crane go along for the ride to find out more about this small town and what happened to Carroll.
Even though the book is called Nailbiter, we are certainly provided with a great amount of information about the population of Buckaroo, and the way Williamson weaves information about the other serial killers is delightfully encased in great narrative that still drives the story forward. There is no stopping and starting, each issue reads so well and looks great.
We don’t see much of Nailbiter in this issue but the small bit we do see is perhaps the funniest thing in the series so far when Warren gets a visit to his cell. But it doesn’t matter as there is so much going on that though it’s good there is still the Nailbiter story in the background that we know is going to pop up at some point, but we don’t really need to delve into it at the moment, and that is what is making this new series so exciting. And furthermore, the last scene as with previous issues really is shocking and sets things up nicely for the next issue.
This series definitely continues to be a must read, it has it all, suspense, action, mysteriousness, and beyond that a great creative team that is producing one of the books of the year issue after issue.
