Super Smash Bros. (SSB) Wii U (yes that’s still the actual title of the game) does not currently have a release date. In fact, it barely has a release window. Currently listed as releasing in “Holiday 2014”, the home console version of the next title in the fan-favorite fighting game is looking better and better each time we see it. However, I believe that Nintendo should hold off on putting it out. Read why after the jump.
As far as I can tell, Nintendo doesn’t have any notable releases on their platform in early 2015. Sure there are interesting titles for current owners to try out after the New Year (assuming they come out on time), like Mario Maker, Splatoon, and Yoshi’s Wooly World, but SSB is a big fish for the Big N. I think a lot of people see Smash as a title that can help Nintendo with their hardware sales problems. Unfortunately, the title that could potentially move the most units has already released this year; Mario Kart has been doing wonderfully, all things considered. I believe Mario Kart will definitely help the Wii U this holiday season, so I don’t think Smash will make that much of a difference in its wake. A more strategic move would be to pad out the beginning of next year with releasing SSB Wii U in early 2015, like March at the latest. This will not only be a great title to carry owners through the beginning of the year, but it fills what appears to be a gap in upcoming Nintendo releases for 2015, the White Whale of the year obviously being Zelda (again, assuming it comes out in 2015 at all).
Also, with SSB releasing on the 3Ds this year, it will only increase hype for the series as it will undoubtedly sell more on the mega-selling handheld platform. This would potentially help would-be owners be more excited for the impending home-console release. That being said, the elephant in the room here is this amiibo thing. I’m not quite sure what to make of that project and its integration into the SSB franchise. Regardless, I firmly believe Nintendo should hold off this big gun until early 2015 to get the most bang for their buck. What do you think? Be sure to comment below and let me know!
