Lionsgate announced today that it is teaming with Haim Saban to bring the Power Rangers franchise back to big screen. While no writer, director, or actors have been announced the new film is expected to bring new life to the twenty year old franchise.
In a statement by Haim Saban, the Power Rangers creator said “Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.”
The Power Rangers franchise began in 1993 with Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and starred a group of young people portraying heroes defending their city from an alien threat. The original series lasted three seasons and went on to spawn twenty more seasons with each featuring a new cast of characters and Power Rangers teams. While previous seasons have sported cameos by previous Rangers, it has yet to be revealed if that will be the case in this upcoming reboot.
Power Rangers is in its twenty-first season titled “Power Rangers: Super Megaforce” and will feature cameos from characters from its twenty season history.
