RetroRealms Arcade Quick Time Review

Developer: WayForward

Publisher: Boss Games

Release date: October 18, 2024

Available on: Nintendo Switch. PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S (reviewed on the S)

Horror games come in various forms, and rather than make a 3D survival horror game developer WayForward opted for a retro, pixellated look. RetroRealms Arcade features two games, one based on John Carpenter’s classic film Halloween, and one based on the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead. While the arcade itself is free, the two games are listed separately on most platforms for purchase. WayForward sets things in an old arcade, with the two machines facing each other (with four others shrouded in a sheet, possibly to make way for other horror franchises down the road as DLC). There are other rooms, one for each title, to display collectibles, and another room with a TV where players can watch developer diaries. The games each feature two characters (Michael Myers and Laurie Strode in Halloween, and Ash and Ashley in Ash vs. Evil Dead), and contain retro platforming, fighting, and shooting. To get all four characters you’ll need to shell out for the deluxe editions, as the girls are DLC characters.

PROS

Good representations of the main characters

Nice realm switching technique to gain access to items

Plenty of extras

Nice versions of each franchise’s music

CONS

Controls can feel inconsistent

Cheap deaths

Upgrades costly

Progress can be frustrating

The games lean heavily into the retro aspect, and for those who enjoy that they’re the ones that will likely enjoy these games more. Others may find them frustrating, as they do have some very cheap deaths and lack some nice modern conveniences. Controls feel like they need to be tightened (especially the wall jumping, which could get very frustrating), and upgrades don’t carry over between characters. The games do nicely with their representation of the main characters, especially in portraying Ash’s humor. The realm switching technique is nice (though it only lasts a certain amount of time), and the collectibles are interesting enough for fans of the franchises. It’s a neat idea, but for those who like their games with more modern touches may want to wait for a sale before purchasing. Retro gamers will likely enjoy the challenge, and this is definitely more geared to them.
