Super Sons #8 Review

Written by: Peter Tomasi

Art by: Jorge Jimenez

Published by: DC Comics

Well here’s something I never thought I would write… Jon and Damian are fighting a tentacle monster?!

Planet of the Capes continues in this fun romp of a comic book. When a book is as consistent and as fun as this one, the only thing to question is what took them so long to make it.

Tomasi shows us that he truly is a master when it comes to writing Damian and Jon. The level of quality is so consistent that pinning down the best parts is difficult. At the core of Super Sons is the constant bickering and sense of family. The duo have an “older/younger brother” dynamic that makes this comic stand out from the rest. Just don’t call Damian the younger brother; you might get your head cut off…

This issue continues the story that started with introducing Jon to the Teen Titans. Even though they are not in this issue, the impact they had on Jon is clear. There is no stopping this book, and it’s truly coming into its own and finding its identity. Super Sons is at the point where I can sit down and truly enjoy it. Earlier issues had the core of the book, but struggled tonally. That is no longer a concern.

Jimenez’s art continues to impress. Even simple images of Damian’s eyes beneath his domino mask and facial expressions are quite good. Super Sons is an expressive book in every sense of the word. The main villain of the book is also portrayed as a true menace and it finally looks like the young heroes might have met their match.

Super Sons is a book for anyone who just enjoys fun books. There are no tie-ins to major storylines, no other required reading to get the most out of Super Sons.

Do yourself a favor get this book, and WB animation, note to you: What the hell are you waiting for? You have a perfect Saturday cartoon here! Produce it already!
