Originally intended as DLC, developer Supra Games felt that Supraland: Six Inches Under was solid enough as a standalone title. You don’t need to play the original to play this one. While bright and colorful, with some entertaining humor, as a first person Metroidvania it stumbles more often than succeeding. Fans of the original may find this title likeable, but newcomers are more likely to be mixed.
PROS
Colorful environments
Some entertaining humor
Short (4-6 hour experience)
Runs smoothly on the Xbox Series S
CONS
Poor design choices
Having to pay for basic abilities such as jump and crouch
Troublesome camera
No memorable characters
Runs poorly on the PS4 (frame rate slowdown, occasional freezing)
Frequent crashes
In all, Supraland: Six Inches Under has its moments, though its appeal may sit better with those who played the original. For Xbox owners, at least, it’s part of this month’s Game Pass offerings. When the platforming works, it works nicely. When the camera intrudes or there is no obvious way forward it can be very frustrating. There are plenty of platformers and Metroidvanias that do a better job.
