valia1X-O Manowar: Valiant 25th Anniversary Special #1

Written by: Robert Venditti

Art by: Cafu

Publisher: Valiant

X-O Manowar has without a doubt been Valiant’s strongest and best-selling series since its launch, and to have kept up that quality is nothing short of remarkable! For X-O Manowar fans this should be a definite pick up this week as for the first time ever we are going to get lots of new information about the suit that we have never known before, and despite being in the middle of a huge story in the main series, this isn’t actually too far away from that based on the end of the last issue. Venditti has been killing it on this book for the past couple of years, and I doubt this special issue is going to be any different.

starve1Starve #1

Written by: Brian Wood

Art by: Danijel Zezelj

Publisher: Image

Who doesn’t love food? Ok maybe I love food a bit too much! Once of the best things about being a foody is watching cooking shows, and it appears I am not the only one as Brian Wood has decided that his latest creator owned series should be about one (or two). Essentially the premise of this series is about the worlds most famous chef putting himself in exile, only to have his little TV show turn into STARVE, a sport where chef’s are pitted against eachother for the pleasure of the super-rich, leading Mr World Famous Chef to come out of hiding to stop it! Sounds promising to me, go check it out tomorrow!

Marvel Previews 06.10.15 – 098Silk #5

Written by: Robbie Thompson

Art by: Stacey Lee

Publisher: Marvel

With the influx of Secret Wars “tie-in” books that are currently going around, it is a breath of fresh air to have a normal Marvel ongoing still to read. This week sees the continuation of Silk and the Black Cat’s run in, with a little bit of help from your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-man to boot. For those people that are **still** moaning away at Slott’s Spidey run, this book here should be something to enjoy and still in keeping with the Spider-Man values.

batman41Batman #41

Written by: Scott Snyder

Art by: Greg Capullo

Publisher: DC Comics

Last issue was complete and utter insanity as Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo pulled off one of the most stunning status quo shifts in recent comic history. Now, two months after the release of Batman #40 they’re back, and if the previews are any indication, better than ever. For those who haven’t yet read the preview, you’re in for a shock of a lifetime and for those of you that have, you know that this is an issue that you simply cannot miss.

allstar1All-Star Section Eight #1

Written by: Garth Ennis

Art by: John McCrea

Publisher: DC Comics

Section Eight are a group of heroes unlike any other in the DCU, led by their beer loving leader “six pack” the gang are back after a long hiatus looking for an eighth member to add to their group, and it seems they’re going after some of DC’s biggest hitters. With some of the sillier, “random” humour being the predominant model for big two comedy books, I’m looking forward to something a bit harder this week. This book seems to have exactly the kind of cynical black humour that really hits the spot for me. This series may be a bit of an acquired taste and is sure to spark very love it/hate it reactions like a lot of Ennis’ stuff, but that’s why I’m recommending it, with DC willing to branch out into other flavours of books I definitely think their efforts should be given a look.

goth7Gotham Academy #7

Written by: Becky Cloonan and Brendan Fletcher

Art by: Karl Kerschl

Publisher: DC Comics

After re-reading the first story arc of Gotham Academy just a week or so ago, my excitement about this book is higher than it has ever been. Issue #7 marks the return from a brief hiatus, as well as the start of a completely new story arc, and potentially a jumping on point for new readers. The book’s unique style combined with its innocent sense of adventure make it a book that appeals to multiple demographics, and there’s something here for everyone to enjoy. Plus, the introduction of a beloved character from the Batman lore is sure to shake things up for the direction of the book. Despite this being a week chocked full of high profile releases, the return of Gotham Academy is the one that has me the most excited.

Which books are you looking forward to this Wednesday, let us know in the comments……
