The Musketeers – Knight Takes Queen Review

Following up on last week’s phenomenal episode, The Musketeers inched closer to the season finale with another great entry. This particular episode kept with the habit of mixing together humor, stressful situations, action, and drama to create an entertaining experience for the viewer. This episode also featured some of the most entertaining side characters yet.

Knight Takes Queen follows the Musketeers as they are on another quest, this time to protect the queen while she is on a relaxing journey. Unfortunately, this routine assignment takes a drastic turn for the worse when an Irish assassin named Gallagher makes multiple attempts on her life. The Musketeers and the queen barely escape the attacks and take refuge in a local convent. While Aramis and Athos work with the nuns to protect the queen, D’artagnan and Porthos make haste to Paris in order to find extra help from Captain Treville.

D’artagnan and Porthos spend the episode trying to discover who made an attempt on the queen’s life, which leads to a few run-ins with Cardinal Richelieu, Milady, and other characters. They also spend time trying to find extra help for a rescue attempt at the convent. Unfortunately, most of the Musketeers are out accompanying King Louis and the German Count Mellendorf on a hunting trip, so D’artagnan and Porthos are unable to find extra help.

Aramis and Athos spend the episode passing the time in a much more violent and entertaining way. Gallagher and his assassins spend a couple days attacking the convent where queen is hiding, so Aramis and Athos protect the Queen by killing as many assassins as possible. This portion is by far the most entertaining part of the episode because Aramis and Athos split their time between killing assassins and discussing extremely random topics. In addition, two of the nuns—one of which has history with Aramis—help repel the attackers by creating homemade Molotov cocktails and throwing them over the walls. When these Molotov’s run out, the nuns switch to throwing beehives at the assassins.

Actually, the nuns are fantastic characters, especially the head nun. She is very feisty and loves harassing Athos and Aramis. This nun even finds the more entertaining attack methods for fighting the assassins, and she’s better at reloading guns than the Musketeers. The head nun is so much fun that the convent portion of the episode may not have been as good if not for the her contributions.

Unfortunately, not all of the nuns were fantastic. One of the storylines involved a nun who was previously engaged to Aramis, until her father shipped her off to the convent. The character was fine, but the storyline seemed a little forced. I was honestly more interested in the budding relationship between Aramis and the Queen. The Queen is more interesting than the nun, and she and Aramis have had some fun moments together during this season.

Knight Takes Queen stands as one the better episodes in an already entertaining season. The overall story was serious, but so many moments were very entertaining that they kept the mood light. One of the better moments happened when D’artagnan was having a sword fight with Porthos and Athos while hanging out in the woods. They spent most of the battle harassing each other while Aramis spent his time birdwatching and cleaning guns. The moment doesn’t sound hilarious, but many of the comments were very entertaining.

Birdwatching is delightful.

Birdwatching is delightful.

Unfortunately, the first season is almost over, just as the episodes are hitting their peak. I do hope that the finale will be just as fantastic while leading into a second season. If not, I can at least enjoy the previous two episodes.
