Most could look at a game like Overwatch and find themselves asking the worth of the game at face value. Doesn’t have a story mode, or that big of a library of game types, and there isn’t entirely too much meaning to the games you play online. Though as many picked this game up to actually play it, all those things didn’t quite matter anymore. Overwatch has an addictive quality to it where the fast pacing and ridiculousness of what happens when both teams clash speak for itself. The characters are unique, what they can do, and what you as the player can do with them created the fun. Not to mention what you’re capable of with the right group of friends.
So speaking of what you’re capable of doing, below I’m going to give what could arguably be the top 10 things to do in Overwatch. For the most part this is in order, going from top to bottom, and of course the order may be different depending on the way you play this game. Because again this game kind of leaves the power in the hands of the player which is the biggest appeal.
1. Environmental kills
This one you probably didn’t see coming as number one, but the fun things tend to be the most difficult to pull off. Environment kills are when you are able to take advantage of the space around you to force a possibly stronger opponent off the map. There are times I’ve gotten Play of The Game for simply knocking off two Reapers at the same time. They did not see it coming at all.
The unpredictability of these kills as well is exciting. You could be Reinhardt and pin the person straight off the cliff with you. You can be Junkrat and blow the person sky-high to their doom. You can even be Pharah and that one rocket which you thought missed someone may have enough knock back to launch them off the edge(This guy was in fact the victim of that).
2. Team Kills
There is nothing more delightful than having a well-built team that can pull this off. Killing maybe three to four at a time is more consistent, but when you have the whole enemy team rolling in and you cut them off this aggressively. You walk away feeling very good about yourself. For some this could be a matter of having the right team, the other team having the wrong selections, or maybe you all just sat there with Ultimates which leave no man standing.
3. Play of The Game
Not everyone you can say is appreciative of seeing how they die every time they die. Though one thing we can all agree on is the motivation to be that guy to make a big enough play to be recognized for it. You may not get extra points for this, though there is a sense of accomplishment knowing that at some point during the game you put a real dent in their plans. Not to mention some of the winning animations you never get tired of seeing.
What Blizzard did that is most appreciative of getting Play of The Game is that you don’t have to get a bunch of kills either to earn it. It took some time before I started seeing people doing things more supportive for it, and that tends to stand out most.
It nonetheless is humorous when someone using Torbjörn wins it and all you see is him banging on his turret. Maybe the turret itself should get the props instead?
4. All in With Overtime!
If you’ve played enough games then you have gone through that rinse and repeat of how heart-stopping Overtime can be. Sometimes you will be right there and the other team has suddenly kicked it into overdrive to hold you back. Without a doubt you can say that this is when most players are at their best. The stakes force you to go above and beyond to clear that area out of every player in your way.
Don’t even get me started on the rush of running back to your point or payload and watching the Overtime meter run down. It is a panic like none other, yet fun regardless of whether you win or lose. Well if you lose you might kick yourself a bit.
5. Finding The Unstoppable Team Combo
I put this one here at number five for the simple fact that finding the right team makes all the difference. They are the ones who will actually act like a team, pick all the right characters, and watch your back. Though most importantly they will sometimes be that team who will probably pick every character with a turret/sentry/chaingun to stop the enemy cold in their tracks. Toss in a Widowmaker and Reaper and the other team might as well start packing it in. Even then this is just one of a number of combos you could choose that with the right people you will have the easiest games ever.
You might feel a little sympathy for the other team as well.
6. Stop That End All Ultimate
The best feeling in the world can be seeing that one end all Ultimate and stopping it before it can do any damage. This could be stopping a rip tire, D.Va’s self-destructing suit, sniping Pharah right out of the sky before she lets loose her brand of justice, or somehow giving your team enough health to withstand Hanzo’s twin dragons. This could be the difference between winning and losing, and without a doubt you might see your life flashing before your eyes in the moment you stop that Ultimate.
7. Mess With The Other Team’s Game
Oh boy. I don’t even know how to get into this one without cringing myself. There are times where a team will mess with your game in a way that might send you into a frenzy. I’m not talking about messing with the other team like zipping around with Tracer or the constant freezing/ice walls from Mei. I’m talking about having that one game where you and friends decide to pick a whole team of Tracers, a whole team of Mei’s. You do not know true pain until you have been both on the receiving end of this and the one to do this to someone else.
8. Traps Galore
There is something satisfying about knowing another player isn’t aware enough to spot the traps you set. Truthfully unless you are a tank, they are quite easy to avoid. So when someone does manage to step into your trap, find themselves frozen, stunned or poisoned, there is a feeling of achievement which can be lasting. These are meant to hinder another player who is a legitimate threat. If you can find a player you are good enough to do this with consistently, that is where the fun begins.
9. Open a Loot Box
At times the Loot Box can be frustrating. Never quite getting the things you know you would like for the characters you actually play. Can throw you over the edge when getting duplicates rather than that chance of picking up credits. Though that doesn’t stop you from the anticipation of seeing what these small boxes have in store for you. Some gets good picks, some don’t. So you are always banking on the chance that luck is on your side.
10. Laying Waste to Your Spawn Point Before Game Start
It’s the small things that count. Those sixty-seconds waiting for the game to begin while attacking can come with some entertaining exploration, though most of all it can simply turn into your team spamming fire to everything they think can break or be moved. You can call it a bad use of your cooldowns if it is long, though what the heck when the enemy can’t really hurt you until you distance yourself from the entrance door. You check out YouTube and there are some cool things some managed to do and they probably had just a little too much time to themselves waiting for the game to start-up.
