Well that was pretty anticlimactic in my opinion. The final issue of Wolverine, and it was pretty much another example of a safe comic with a happy ending.
It’s such a shame this run has been so poor, because including this Volume and the last one, Wolverine hasn’t had a good solo book in years, and now they are killing him off! At least Charles Soule will be at the helm so that should make it readable.
We are once again faced with Wolverine vs. Sabretooth, I don’t know about you but I feel kind of bored with this battle. Wolverine has lived such a long life and probably created many an enemy, so why do we keep going back to Sabretooth, and if this was the big baddy ending (spoiler alert) why didn’t they just kill each other already!
Even though I wasn’t a fan of the run, Cornell did a great job leading up to the ‘battle’, the dialogue was really to the point and felt like Cornell had a great grasp of the characters.
Getting to the ‘battle’, it was a great fight between the two, it looked fantastic and the art team did a great job. The double page spread of them jumping at each other just looked incredible.
After the fight sequence I wasn’t a fan of how the issue finished, it seemed very safe and very ‘happy’. I don’t know if this is because I was expecting there to be mayhem leading up to the Death of Wolverine storyline, but either way I felt very underwhelmed.
This volume and this battle with Sabretooth definitely won’t go down as one of the best in my opinion. It did have some great points in this issue with the conversation between Sabretooth and Wolverine, and it looked pretty good compared to the last few issues, but nothing about this issue or run has left a permanent impact on me with one of my favourite characters. All I can say is that I hope for better next week with the start of the Death of Wolverine.
