Silk has definitely been one of the more exciting newly created comic book characters in recent memory, and after a stellar first few issues, and some involvement in Spider-Verse, she has a relaunched comic in the form of a #1.
Thankfully, the relaunch doesn’t make any changes to the creative team which worked so well in the last volume. Robbie Thompson & Stacey Lee are really carving out a fantastic character, and one that might not have been as effective had it been given to a different creative team.
The stories in this comic have been brilliant purely because of how simple and down to earth the themes are. Silk is very much an unassuming hero who just wanted to find her family after years of being locked up in a bunker of sorts. And this theme continues in this relaunch, there is a very simple but intriguing narrative that lures you in to this corner of the Spider-Man world. Yes, we get the usual editor notes about this happened here and check that out over here, but Thompson has managed to use well known Spidey characters and incorporated them into a Silk story seamlessly.
The story itself in this issue brings us bang up to date as to what has happened to Silk post Secret Wars, what she is up to in her job, where she is living, and what her current mission is. As usual there is the fantastic internal monologue, which really ties the visuals and the story together nicely, and the twists and turns in the storyline really makes this an interesting and well-paced opening issue that could go in so many directions for the rest of the series.
Stacey Lee’s artwork is flawless, each panel looks amazing! I am a particular fan of the way she inks eyes, especially Silk’s as it adds so much character to the visuals. And as usual she is joined by Ian Herring on colours and he paints this world exactly how I like a Spidey related story.
Therefore, with great twists and turns, an enjoyable story, and a really exciting last page, this Silk fan over here was really happy to have this series back in the palm of his hands!
