New Suicide Squad #1 Review

Written by: Sean Ryan

Art by: Jeremy Roberts

Publisher: DC

Let’s start off with asking readers a simple question. Did you enjoy reading DC’s Suicide Squad the first time New 52 released it? Yes? No? Either way, this NEW Suicide Squad will deliver to the already made fans of the old series, and deliver to the people who need convincing.

Issue one had all of the right topics for what I like to call “the stereotypical man”. Ryan starts us off with some humor between new and old team members of the Suicide Squad. New team members including the ever killing Deathstroke, and a unbelievably gorgeous woman who calls herself Joker’s Daughter. Claws are out when it comes to the bonding of returning Harley Quinn and this supposed Joker’s Daughter. To be fair though, claws are not retracted when it involves two of DC’s biggest Assassin’s either, Deadshot and Deathstroke. We are also introduced to a new operator to the team, Victor Sage, who doesn’t quite get along with the reappearing Amanda Waller, so all in all, you can tell there is going to be a lot of good drama between these characters.

Victor Sage doesn’t waste anytime sending the newly assembled team on a mission, that seems to be a piece of cake. This is where the issue truly takes on pumping adrenaline! The team is sent to Russia to take care of some people who are “stepping over the line”, and Roberts takes us through pages upon pages of each team member doing what they do best. Ryan keeps great dialogue up while Roberts pounds the pages with blood, battle actions that can make you wince, and clever battle strategies that could be expected from a “crazy” team like this.

Think everything is hunky dory? Think again, Ryan ends this issue with a “WTF” moment, and does it so well that waiting until next month will probably be an issue for me. So to put the nice stereotypical man topics into perspective, we have comedy, sexy women, blood, action, and battle tactics. Seriously folks, New Suicide Squad is doing it right.
