Final Fantasy XVI Quick Time Review

Pros:

  • Engaging story that has a slow burn to start, but ramps up and never lets go once it’s kicked into high gear.
  • Gameplay is intense and satisfying as you continue to unlock Eikons and new combat moves.
  • Fun replayability with Arcade mode to get missions graded ala Devil May Cry.
  • Each Eikon is unique and their boss battles are engaging each time.
  • Loads of accessibility options to tailor your experience to best suit your needs.

Cons:

  • Side missions are bland and boring and are almost always fetch quests.
  • Gill/experience earned in mission or in the field feels unbalanced.
  • Performance mode stutters are annoying.

In Summary

I think this may go down as my favorite Final Fantasy game to date. Its combat is top-notch and almost always engaging as its inspired by Devil May Cry, and the story takes elements from Berserk and a Brandon Sanderson novel with some JRPG tropes into a near-perfect mix. The odd experience gains and gill drops (seriously 2 gill as an item in the field, and 10 experience for a mission?) feels off, and the side missions feel generic and boring. That being said I can’t stop playing or thinking about it when I am doing something else, and that’s something only a rare set of video games do for me. It’s another GOTY contender for sure and an action RPG I wholeheartedly recommend everyone take part in.
