Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Quick Time Review

Developer: Rocksteady Studios

Publisher: Warner Bros Games

Release date: January 30, 2024

Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X/S (reviewed on S), PC

Nine years after the successful Arkham trilogy, developer Rocksteady returns with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. This time, instead of a purely single player game, the new title is more a looter shooter that can be played solo or 4 player co-op. While Kevin Conroy does return as Batman, the focus is on villains Harley Quinn (Tara Strong), Deadshot (Bumper Robinson), Boomerang (Daniel Lapaine), and King Shark (Samoa Joe), sent in by Amanda Waller (Debra Wilson) to combat the Justice League, which has come under the control of Brainiac (Jason Isaacs). While a lot works here, especially the voice cast, the game as a service aspect takes things down a notch, and it remains to be seen how viable the end game content will be following the 10-15 hour campaign. Making these characters rely mainly on guns doesn’t always work as well. Transversal can be fun but cooldowns lead to unnecessary interuptions in travelling across Metropolis. The campaign’s story is decent, but repetitive mission design can prove frustrating to some.

PROS

Good voice cast with well written dialogue

Good campaign

Good visuals

Plenty of fan service with cameos from various DC characters

Melee combat fluid

CONS

Game turned into a looter shooter

Enemies at times can only be killed in certain ways

Repetitive mission design

Inconsistent traversal

Some poor AI for both enemies and characters

Camera not always helpful in spots

Too many new weapons underpowered compared to those already equipped

It remains to be seen how well Warner Bros will support the end game content, but as it is at launch, despite being set up nicely, is more of the same gameplay as the campaign. Poor mission structure and design choices hamper a fairly decent campaign that has plenty of cameos from other DC characters. There’s some fun to be had here, but plenty of frustration as well. Best to wait for a sale.
