This week the Doomed story turned epic with the release of 3 issues
I am a huge fan of Soule’s Superman/Wonder Woman series but the last issue wasn’t the best if I am being honest, so I was coming into this annual with not the most amount of confidence especially as the Doomed storyline does seem to be dragging a bit. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this issue and even though it turned into a bit of a Justice League book, the main elements that have made this book great over the past couple of months did appear in some places.
Taking this book as part of the Doomed story and not as a Superman/Wonder Woman issue it really delivered in progressing with the story and reignited my interest in this event. It was action packed and looked great. Like the last issue we see Soule’s take on all 3 storylines that is happening in the Superman books, Lois/Brainiac, Steel and Lana, and Wonder Woman and the Justice League trying to save Earth while Clark has still not returned to his normal self.
As well as predominately being a Justice League issue, we even get some glimpses of other DC characters including Swamp Thing and the Teen Titans, which was quite fun and really added to and gave some credence to the whole earth destroying, hero saving idea.
Soule really takes Superman and Wonder Womans relationship to the extreme here with a full on confrontation or let’s say fight, but the real fight that I found quite impressive was the one that is happening internally to Superman. It has probably been the highlight of this event the way Clark has struggled from within SuperSpikeyMan, and has really shown, for one of the first times in The New 52, the personality and the strength of will and morality that Clark has, and in this issue it was delivered so well and really contributed to a major part of this issue.
This really was an exciting read and if you have been following the Doomed storyline so far it is clear that things are really picking up and it is great to see Superman written so well (and looking so good) in The New 52.
